Paraphilia – Sexual exploration or mental disorder?
In Spain (where Cherry is based), we had a Spanish movie release earlier this year that caused quite a stir!
KIKI – Al Amor Se Hace (Translated to Quickie – Love is so) is a compilation of 5 short stories about the exploration of sexuality and more specifically, discovering your “paraphilias”.
Paraphilia is described by the American Psychiatric Association as the experience of intense sexual arousal to atypical objects, fetishes, situations, fantasies, behaviours, or individuals.
The actual number of Paraphilias is under debate, with some sources claiming there are as many as over 500 known paraphilias! That’s a lot of fetishes to choose (or suffer) from! ?
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) currently has 8 specific paraphilic ‘disorders’ listed!
I guess the interesting thing here is that depending on which circles you move in, the perception of paraphilia varies dramatically from ‘sexual exploration’ to a documented ‘mental disorder’ (as have so many sexual activities before it!)
That said – from a business perspective – there are definitely some new niche adult sites up for grabs with the weird and wonderful paraphilias that have been recorded over recent years!
For those of you with an iron stomach: (Be warned, I cringed at quite a few of these), just take a look at Huffington Post’s list of 46 paraphilias from a few years ago. 46 Sexual Fetishes You’ve Never Heard Of (From PERV: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us by Jesse Bering, published in October 2013 by Scientific American/ Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC.
